ASSENTAMENTO DA VIA / TRACK LAYING

A imagem acima descreve as referências necessárias. O comando será analógico, achou-se que blocos de 700mm de comprimento darão uma ideia de tráfego compacto.  O primeiro carril é montado a 30mm da berma da frente do módulo até à base do balastro. Dessa linha traça-se uma 2ª linha com 37mm (a distância standard da geometria Tomix para raios apertados).

 The image above describes the references needed for the tracks. The command will be analogic, 700mm for the length of a block seems give a good notion of compact traffic.
The first track is laid 30mm from the edge to the base of the ballast. Te second trck is laid 37mm inwards. 

 A via assenta directamente sobre o contraplacado. O balastro em plástico no carril deve amortecer o ruído, não se notou. Usaram-se pregos para segurar a via porque vão ser tapados com pavimento. Os carris terão de ficar 1mm acima do pavimento para que possam ser limpos. O acabamento do pavimento será com texturas impressas em cartolina de 180g (0.20mm de espessura).

The track is laid directly over the plywood. The plastic ballast in the track muffles the sound; at least we didn’t notice it. The tracks were nailed as they’ll be covered by the pavement. The rails have to be 1mm above the pavement so they can be cleaned. The pavement will be printed textures on 180g card (0.20mm thick).

Usou-se um punção para martelar o prego até ao fim, sem bater nos carris.
 A punch was been used to avoid hammering the rails. 

Notou-se um ligeiro desalinhamento que chamou a nossa atenção porque tencionamos usar texturas impressas para o acabamento do pavimento.

There was a minimal misalignment that took our attention as we intend to use printed parts with textures replicating the pavement

Um módulo concluído. Há que ter muita atenção ao corte das pranchas. Pedi para me cortarem o contraplacado numa grande loja de bricolage e a exactidão não é grande. Tive sorte os erros eram à volta de 1mm nalgumas das pranchas. Recomendo que se vá a uma típica serração onde o trabalho será executado por pessoal especializado.

A finished module. The cuting of the plates desserves care. I bought the plywood in a big bricolage store; they do the cutting, but not that much carefully. I recommend to go to an old style shop and be attended by professionals.

 Enganei-me nas referências e encomendei algumas rectas com 72.5mm; o resultado é visível na foto. Por outro lado talvez seja recomendável ter em standby algumas destas rectas, para o caso de pranchas com os cortes mal medidos.
 I ordered the wrong references, so I used some tracks measuring 72.5; you can check the outcome on the photo. On the other hand  it might come handy to have a couple of them on standby, just in case.

Os edifícios são lixo, relíquias de há 25 anos. Usei-os para testar se em módulos tão estreitos cabem edifícios em meio relevo.

The buildings are trash, old relics form my first layout 25 years ago. They were used to check if it is possible on such narrow modules to have half relief buildings.

Ansiosos por testar a minha ideia para o pavimento, colei umas quantas peças de cartão de duas espessuras, para ver no que dá. Foi um nin.

Anxious to test my concept for the pavement I glued some pieces of cardboard. The result is inconclusive, a yes and a no, if one may say that way.

Conclusões:

- O conceito é exequível, rápido e barato. Não exige ferramentas sofisticadas. Quem o desejar e tiver mesa de corte pode serrar finas tiras de contraplacado, é provável que fique mais leve que cartão.

- A colagem das tiras de cartão têm de ser feitas com a ajuda firmar bem o cartão. Notámos que, talvez por ter inchado com a humidade da cola, o cartão subiu e interferia com o rolamento das rodas.

 Neste ensaio descurámos a curvatura do perfil do pavimento da rua, que em Lisboa é bem assinalável. É uma característica que vale a pena incluir no projecto. Vamos ensaiar novas soluções.

Conclusions:

- The concept is doable, fast and cheap. It doesn’t require sophisticated tools. Thin plywood can be used, but requires a table saw. It might be lighter than cardboard.

- When gluing it is a must to use C-clamps to hold fast the card. In this case rose a little and interfered with the wheels.  

In this test we didn’t care for the curvature in profile of the typical Lisbon street. Next test will be to find a way to build easily that look.
